Santander Ferry Port Information

About The Port

Santander is a Spanish port city located in the north of the country. The port is very close to the city centre itself, making the ferry a very accessible means of travel. It connects Spain with the UK via two routes: Plymouth and Portsmouth. The travel times are 20 hours and 26 hours 45 minutes respectively.

Santander port has quite a fascinating history, particularly in the early 20th century when King Alfonso XII built the Palacio de la Magdalena there for the royal family. From there, the port began to gain significant popularity from the royal-interest as well as a bustling seaside resort. The port itself dates all the way back to the Romans in 19BC but the modern ferry routes began to take shape in the 1970s, all the way through to the busy port we see today.

Both the Santander to Plymouth route and Santander to Portsmouth route are operated by Brittany Ferries. There is a selection of up to 4 sailings per week depending on the time of year.

Directions For Getting There

If you are travelling to Santander port by car, take the N634 westwards along the coast towards Coruna, and eastwards towards Bilbao. The N611 goes south to Valladolid and the N623 links the ferry port with Burgos. To get to the port from town follow the signs to Puerto, Zona Maritma or Ferry. The port is well-signposted once you reach the city. The ferry port is only suitable for picking up and dropping off. If you are looking for a longer-term stay, there are paid car parks nearby.

If you are travelling by train, the train station is 5-10 minutes away from the terminal with services to Bilbao and Oviedo. RENFE is the national railway system and has links to almost every town in Spain.

If you are looking to reach the port via coach, there is a coach station in Santander about 5-10 minutes from Santander Ferry terminal and there are regular services to and from Madrid and Bilbao.
